He has made more than 10 contact the last thirty minutes - not to go over the match however to keep revising his bet.

Five minutes earlier his money was on Australia, now as the Indian batsman prepares yourself to deal with the last over he's changed his mind.

"I think India is winning, make the modification," he informs his bookmaker on the phone.

And a few minutes later his forecast comes real, as India wins the match in a nail-biting surface.

"I have made $200 today," he says with a childish glee.

'Black money'

According to the Doha-based International Centre for sports betting Security, India's illegal sports betting market is worth some $150bn a year. And much of that gambling money is directed towards cricket.

With no legal avenue, punters put bets utilizing their phones by making calls to bookmakers. Gamblers can wager on anything associated to the cricket match, from who is winning to the greatest specific run scorer.

Most of these deals include so-called "black cash", which is cash not stated to the taxman.

The 1867 Public Gambling Act bars any type of sports betting in India, but unlike in the US which has a law prohibiting web sports betting, there is absolutely nothing comparable here.

And overseas sports betting companies are using this loophole to draw Indians. Even though there are no online wagering operators based out of India, a lot people have with offshore firms.

"Legally you can escape [with this], as the law is ambiguous for online gambling," says Mumbai- based legal representative HP Ranina.

But in spite of this, it is "offline gambling", done through telephone call which dominate the marketplace.

Calls for legalisation

The clamour to legalise sports betting in cricket has actually grown after a panel selected by India's Supreme Court proposed the idea, saying it would assist secure down on corruption in the nation's favourite sport.

The Justice RM Lodha Commission was established to suggest changes in the performance of India's cricket regulatory body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), after the 2013 Indian Premier League wagering scandal emerged.

Two franchises have been prohibited for 2 years after some gamers and team authorities were found guilty of fixing parts of the match at the request of bookmakers.

The panel likewise argues that legalised wagering will generate tax incomes for the exchequer that could total up to $2bn a year.

Even gamblers feel that legalising sports betting wagering is a relocation in the ideal direction.

"I don't mind paying some money out my earnings, as long as I can bet publicly," states our cricket gambler.

It would also open a big company opportunity for certified bookmakers and international online wagering business to set up operations in India.

And it would help limit match fixing in cricket and other sports betting, argue many, by helping make transactions associated with gambling more transparent.

"If you work alongside sports betting companies, you will have a really effective approach of marking out match repairing," says George Oborne, who runs a mock sports betting website, India Bet.

But lots of likewise believe, that the taxes imposed on the bettor and the bookie will need to be sensible to make it appealing enough for them to gamble lawfully.

However, there are constraints.

"Definitely there will be prohibited sports betting due to the fact that (some) people wouldn't desire to leave an audit path by getting in the white market," says Mr Oborne.

He includes that individuals who utilize unaccounted money to position huge bets will never ever bet legally.

Approval question

For sports betting to be legalised, parliamentary approval will be needed to develop a brand-new law, and politically this will be a hard idea to sell.

"Although many individuals are involved in some sort of gaming - it's still a questionable issue for lots of," says our unnamed punter.

And considered that India has a federal structural - each state will need to also pass a separate law to legalise sports betting in their territory.

"The procedure is so long and challenging that it will take years," states Mr Ranina."That's why, we are negative about this becoming a truth anytime soon."

Yet with the idea having actually been backed by a main panel for the very first time, at least a debate has sparked around a subject - which previously was considered a taboo.
