When someone has diabetes, it is important that they test their blood glucose levels on a regular basis. Knowing what their healthy level is and noticing any changes could give them an important head start on controlling any issues that may arise. Testing the levels of glucose in the blood is very easy and can be done at home with simple tools.
In fact, at the Annual Meeting of the American Diabetes Association in June 2009, an International Committee recommended that an A1c assay should be used to diagnose diabetes instead of a fasting plasma glucose or oral glucose tolerance test. It is a useful tool to monitor changes in treatment plans or to monitor patients who are not meeting their blood glucose goals.
